Madeline Alcott: Petit Vour

LBB: Tell us a little about yourself, and what you do?

MA: Since Spring 2013, I've been running my own business (Petit Vour), so most of my day-to-day revolves around evolving the business. Petit Vour (pehtee vohr) is literally the project of my dreams. Every day I get to work with cruelty-free brands and create purposeful content all for the sake of cleaner, kinder beauty.

LBB: What does Petit Vour mean?

MA: It's fancy for green beauty box! But technically speaking, the name is derived from the French confection, "petit four." There are certain parallels between petit fours and what we offer (i.e. pretty little luxuries) so it's very fitting. Plus, it's Frenglish, which has a fun and fanciful connotation :)

LBB: What’s your favorite part about your "job"?

MA: Without a doubt, the best part about my job is hearing a customer/subscriber rave about a new product discovery from PV. Every time that happens, I feel like shouting, "YES!! We did it!" When we were first brainstorming the business that was exactly what we were aiming for. We knew tons of women who weren't necessarily "green" or "vegan," but had a definite interest in exploring better/kinder options IF the products were pretty and could perform well.

LBB: What are your must have beauty products?

MA: What can't you leave the house without? My super minimalist essentials include: Antioxidant Dew by Kypris (it makes your skin look like you just woke from hibernation), Thousand Petal Beautifying Mist by R.L. Linden & Co. (refreshes skin when you need a boost), AXIOLOGY Lipstick (a killer cruelty-free lipstick--oxymoron intended) and, of course, fun nails to pull the ensemble together. Sunset Blvd and Malibu Beach by Lauren B. are two of my absolute favorites.

LBB: What is the most special/your favorite thing about where you live?

MA: The community, absolutely. It's a wonderful thing when you feel like you belong and there are so many establishments (and people!) here that do a great job welcoming newcomers. To anyone who visits Dallas, make room for Spiral Diner--It's a special place.

LBB: When and why were you inspired to launch Petit Vour, and how did you come up with the idea to create a vegan subscription box and destination for customers?

MA: Before our launch in spring 2013, there really, truly wasn't a place for luxury vegan beauty. We knew the products existed, but finding the best required quite a bit of digging and sifting, which many people simply don't have time for. We wanted to make green beauty, not only accessible, but inspirational...especially to those who generally shop conventionally at fine department stores. The subscription box allowed subscribers to access the best of green, cruelty-free beauty without much investment. Our goal, of course, was for them to fall in love with the idea of a safer and more responsible upgrade!

LBB: If you could live anywhere in the world..where would you live and why?

MA: It's honestly so hard for me to decide on a permanent residence, because there are so many places I still need to see. Of the places I've been, my favorite place is probably Portland, Oregon. The rumors are true--It's a total haven for health-conscious, independent-thinking, nature lovers.

LBB: What is next for Petit Vour?

MA: Petit Vour is growing! Last year our team doubled in size and this year we'll be expanding further, so that we can really take our content and visual creation up a notch. We'll also be adding a few more essential items to the shop ;)

LBB: What is one piece of advice you would tell young businesswomen that are starting out?

MA: It seems silly to say this, but I think one of the most important questions you can ask yourself as a business woman/man is, "How am I serving?" What exactly are you providing and how can you do a better job? When you consider the needs of others (brands, bloggers, customers) in your work, you become very valuable!
